New vehicle sequencing algorithms with vehicular infrastructure integration for an isolated intersection

In this paper, we study a novel vehicle sequencing algorithm for an isolated intersection with a new control method. The control method is based on the utilization of Vehicular Infrastructure Integration and the consideration that each vehicle arrives individually. We consider knowledge of each vehicle’s arrival time and the time each vehicle needs to traverse the intersection. Our objective is to schedule all approaching vehicles to pass this intersection in the shortest duration, the throughput of the intersection will then be increased. A Branch and Bound algorithm and a heuristic are proposed to evacuate the approaching vehicles as soon as possible. Structural properties of the problem are carefully investigated to simplify the search procedure of an optimal passing sequence. Simulation results in evacuation time, average waiting time and average queue size demonstrate the performance gain obtained when using the proposed schemes.
